How to Do Simple CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation. The purpose is to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

CPR is a useful technique in many emergencies and can help save a life during a cardiac or breathing emergency. CPR alone is unlikely to restart the heart. Its main purpose is to restore partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to perform simple CPR when there is a cardiac emergency.

First of all check for signs of breathing. A person in a cardiac arrest won't be breathing and will be unconscious. If the victim is not breathing normally for more than 10 seconds, you need to start chest compressions.

Kneel next to the person and place you hands one on the top of another at the center of the chest. Interlock your fingers and with straight arms, use the heel of your hand to push the breastbone down firmly and smoothly.

Push down 5 cm (2.0 in) and 6 cm (2.4 in) deep at a rate of 100 to 120 chest compressions per minute. It's about 2 compressions every second. Give 30 chest compressions.

After the compressions you need to breathe for the person. Open the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin. Take a breath, make a seal around their mouth and breathe out steadily.

You will observe the person’s chest rise and fall. Give a second rescue breath. The two breaths should not take more than 5 seconds. Repeat 30 compressions and two rescue breaths until professional help arrives.

Anybody can learn how to perform CPR and everybody should know this. According to a study 80 percent people don't what to do if somebody is in cardiac arrest. This is alarming as most cardiac arrests occur at home and knowing how to perform CPR can save the life of a loved one.
